The Mooncake Field Guide

Updated 11 September 2026 · Mid-Autumn falls on 25 September 2026

Hong Kong's mooncake season is longer than a school term, and about a fifth of it isn't even mooncakes. Here's the whole 2026 board — which box, which card, which lane — minus the small talk.

Did you know?

The first 2026 mooncake promo landed on 13 May — 135 days before the festival. Some ice-cream brands were discounting mooncakes before the summer holidays had even started.

First things first

When do the deals actually start?

Earlier every year. "Early bird" pricing now covers almost a third of the calendar — the premium patisseries and ice-cream brands open in May, and by the time the traditional bakeries turn up in August they've been at it for two months. If you see a mooncake ad in spring, that's normal now.

The best window for a traditional box is late August to mid-September, when the bakeries stack a bank-card discount on top of the early-bird price. After the 20th, the range thins out fast.

Mid-Autumn promotions, by the month we first saw them. *September is still being counted. The festival is 25 September.
Did you know?

One in five "Mid-Autumn" promotions isn't about mooncakes at all. This year brands have flown the lantern over mattresses, bedding, Korean ginseng, wine flash sales, and a trip to Chiang Mai's lantern festival. Search "中秋優惠" and you might end up furniture shopping.

The 30-second version

How to pick a box without reading 67 brand pages

Choose the lane first. Each one prices its boxes a completely different way — and once you know your lane, you're choosing between three or four names, not sixty-seven.

Did you know?

The novelty box is a genre now. This year: Pokémon gift boxes (V City, A-1 Bakery) from ~HK$238, and IKEA's two cat-themed mini-mooncake boxes at MegaBox for HK$59.90 each. The lid matters as much as the lotus paste.

01

Traditional HK bakeries

Wing Wah · Kee Wah · Maxim's · Arome · Saint Honoré · A-1

The reunion-table default: double-yolk white lotus, made in Hong Kong, hands it to your mother-in-law without a second thought. Price = early-bird box price plus a bank-card discount, so this is the lane where your wallet decides. Boxes land around HK$88–170 after discount; the really deep cuts want a specific card or membership.

02

Supermarkets & retailers

ParknShop · Wellcome · city'super · Yata · Big C · HKTVmall

Vouchers and mall "spend-and-redeem". You're rarely buying a box — you're buying vouchers (from ~HK$170) or hitting a spend target to redeem one. Best for the office bulk order, or for stacking supermarket-card cashback on top (UnionPay at Yata, 7% back).

03

Premium & Western patisserie

COVA · Godiva · Paul Lafayet · agnès b. · hotels

The impress-someone box: chocolate custard, snow-skin, a hotel name on the lid. Discounts here are member-priced and land early — COVA members up to 54% off, Godiva corporate gifting up to 30%, agnès b. 20% on pre-orders. Not a member? The "discount" mostly isn't for you — the box is the point, not the markdown.

04

App platforms — Klook & KKday

Klook · KKday · HKTVmall

Three brands, but between them they run more mooncake promos than every traditional bakery combined — flash sales, buy-one-get-one, codes locked to a payment method. Klook's are almost always a PayMe BOGO on a named day and time (they clear within the hour); KKday's are stacked coupon codes worth HK$60–120 a box. Fast, time-boxed, and where the durian people live.

Also flying the 中秋 flag

Health-gift hampers (Imperial Bird's Nest; Yata seafood boxes from HK$99), reunion-dinner poon choi (Super Super abalone poon choi HK$798, was HK$1,140), and the genuinely unrelated — mattresses, bedding, wine flash sales.

Did you know?

"Up to 54% off retail" sounds wild until you remember nobody pays retail for a mooncake box. It's a bundle game: 87 of this year's 252 promos are "buy two, get a third" deals. The per-box price tells you more than the percentage.

How the 252 promotions are built. "Bundle" wins — the box is bait for the gift set.

The single most useful table on this page

Which card gets you the cheapest mooncakes?

Most bakery promos name a payment method, and it almost always ties to one chain. So the "best" mooncake deal in Hong Kong right now isn't a brand — it's whatever card is already in your wallet.

Offers as advertised. Some boxes sold out or expired between our capture and now — treat this as the shape of the market, not a live price list, and check the brand's own page before buying.

Did you know?

Three of the picks above aren't mooncakes at all — poon choi, bird's nest, a paper lantern for the kids. The festival is a lot bigger than the pastry, and the promotions follow it there.

One thing to keep in mind

Before you shop

Everything here is a promotion as it was advertised — not a shelf price, not a receipt, not what a box cost last year. Offers move fast and terms change without notice, so treat this as the shape of the season, then check the brand's own page before you buy. We can draw the map; you still have to walk it.

Next year's season starts in May
